In Summer 2021 we were approached by a client looking to develop their own land to create a new home for them to downsize into. The requirement was to blend the building into the landscape, look at new building technologies and make best use of natural light.

The development comprises the building of a L shaped single storey barn inspired home plus attic accommodation. The house will be set into the sloping site to utilise the natural topography and to successfully integrate into the landscape. The dwelling will be timber framed with timber dark cladding and exposed brickwork for the first 600mm under a tiled roof.

Our brief was to provide a hall, utility, sitting room, open plan kitchen/living/diner, bathroom, and bedroom on the ground floor and two bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor.

Access would be provided using the existing access to the west with parking and turning within the site. Landscaping along the eastern and southern boundaries would be retained.

The dwelling will be self-sufficient in terms of drainage and wastewater, would utilise renewable energy technologies including air source heating and would include stored carbon and over- insultation to ensure a low energy cost and maximise thermal energy.
